Pearland’s own Warrick “Coach” Baker is asking his neighbors to help push him over the top in the 2026 Mr. Health and Fitness competition, where he currently sits in fourth place heading into tonight’s cutoff for the Top 5.
A Vote That Helps Kids, Cancer Research, and Local Athletes
Mr. Health and Fitness is a national fundraiser for the B+ Foundation, a nonprofit that supports childhood cancer research. Community members can cast one free vote per day, and additional donations purchase extra votes, with those dollars going directly to the foundation’s mission.
If Baker wins the $20,000 grand prize, he plans to donate all of it to Inspire One, a local foundation he’s helping launch that funds athletic scholarships for youth who qualify for national Junior Olympics but can’t afford the travel and competition costs. Inspire One will also help Masters track and field athletes, competitors in their 30s through their 90s, cover expenses to national and world competitions they often pay for entirely out of pocket. As part of its model, Masters athletes will mentor younger competitors through workshops and clinics, creating a pipeline of performance, character, and community service.
An 11-Year Fight to Run Again
Baker’s story stretches far beyond the weight room or the track. A scholarship athlete since age 11, he earned a full ride to school in seventh grade, went on to a Hall of Fame high school career, and competed in Division I college track. For decades, athletics gave him structure, opportunity, and a vision for the future.
Everything changed around age 38, when Baker suffered severe disc issues in his lower back, leading to contortions, paralysis, and the loss of his ability to run or jump. For 11 years, from 38 to 50, he lived with the reality that his athletic life might be over, stepping back from community involvement at times simply because of his health.
Just as he was resigning himself to never competing again, Baker says he experienced healing at age 50 that restored his ability to move and train. He calls his return to competition a testimony and a promise: since God gave his athletic ability back, he intends to give it back in service, to youth, to Masters athletes, and to anyone who sees his journey and finds hope for their own struggle.
After that 11-year journey, he is a 4-time All-American USATF Masters athlete and has represented the United States at Masters World Championships, proving that his comeback is not just personal but world-class.
Why Track and Field Needs Help
Part of Baker’s passion is rooted in how underfunded the sport of track and field is compared to others. He notes that while basketball, baseball, and soccer teams often draw sponsors and community backing, track athletes, from youth to professionals, frequently pay their own way to meets with little structural support. Even at the professional level, many runners cover their own travel and meet expenses, with no league minimums or guaranteed backing.
That’s why Inspire One is designed to “fill the gap” for both youth and Masters athletes, especially as major events like the Masters World Championships take place overseas, putting travel well beyond the reach of retirees and fixed-income competitors. For Baker, every vote is a chance to change that reality for someone trying to chase a lane on the track instead of a bill.
How Pearland Can Help Today
Baker is asking Pearland and the surrounding community to rally behind him before voting for the Top 5 closes tonight, Thursday, February 26th, at 9 p.m. CST. Residents can support him by:
Visiting his contest page at https://mrhealthandfit.com/2026/warrick-baker to cast their free daily vote. Sharing the link with friends, family, coworkers, church groups, and teams to help mobilize as many free votes as possible.
Considering a donation through the contest site, which both buys extra votes and supports childhood cancer research through the B+ Foundation.
Baker says the competition comes down to one question: how many people can you mobilize, how much awareness can you create, and how well can you connect your personal journey to a cause bigger than yourself.
For Pearland, backing Warrick Baker isn’t just about helping a local favorite crack the Top 5; it’s about standing behind kids fighting cancer, young athletes chasing dreams, and older athletes proving that second chances can still break the tape at the finish line.
